Bringing electrical safety to life at MCC! Fifth- and sixth-grade students at Murray County Central got a real-world lesson in farm electrical safety this week as Nobles Cooperative Electric Line Superintendent Cody Hansen and the Nobles Cooperative Electric team walked them through situations they could someday encounter themselves. “Kids growing up in our area are around farm equipment all the time, and many of them will be operating that equipment themselves before too long,” Cody said. “We want them to understand that if equipment comes into contact with a power line, what they do next can make the difference between staying safe and being seriously injured.” Using full-size farm equipment, students saw three different scenarios — a sprayer tangled in an overhead power line, a combine contacting a line, and a tractor striking underground electrical equipment. One of the most important lessons: If your equipment contacts a power line, stay in the cab. Call 911, warn others to stay away and wait until utility personnel tell you it is safe to exit. The Nobles Cooperative Electric team also demonstrated what to do in the rare situation when fire or another immediate danger makes it necessary to get out. They showed students how to jump clear without touching the equipment and ground at the same time, land with both feet together, and then shuffle or “bunny hop” as far away as possible while keeping their feet together. Cody also demonstrated how electricity can spread through the ground — helping students understand why keeping their feet together is so important. The underground demonstration brought another lesson home. The damaged green electrical box used in the demonstration came from an actual incident just a few weeks ago, showing students that underground electrical equipment can be every bit as dangerous as overhead lines. Watch your surroundings. Assume electrical equipment is energized. And know what to do before an accident happens. For more than 60 years, the York family has been part of the Nobles Cooperative Electric story. Director Lee York has served on the Nobles board since 1993, continuing a family legacy of cooperative leadership that began when his father, Jay York, was elected to the board in 1964. Today, Lee continues to bring the perspective of a farmer, longtime cooperative member and lifelong area resident to the board.
