Most people assume storms are the biggest cause of power outages. This year, however, our local wildlife has been giving Mother Nature some stiff competition! Through the first half of 2026, small animals and birds have been responsible for 1,394 member service outages on our system. Curious squirrels, raccoons, birds, and other critters sometimes come into contact with energized electrical equipment. It only takes a split second for an animal to bridge two energized points or touch a grounded component, resulting in an outage. While our crews continue installing protective devices and upgrading equipment to help reduce these incidents, Mother Nature's wildlife doesn't always cooperate. So the next time your lights blink, don't be too quick to blame the weather—it just might have been one adventurous squirrel... or an overly ambitious bird keeping our line crews on their toes!

Underground Line Inspections Beginning Starting today, our partners from Star Energy Services will be conducting underground line inspections in the following areas: Lime Lake Township Murray Township Worthington Township Elk Township City of Avoca These inspections are part of our ongoing commitment to providing safe, reliable electric service to our members. During this project, you may see Star Energy crews and vehicles working along roadways, utility easements, and near member properties.
