August always seems to arrive faster than expected. Before we know it, school buses are back on the roads, backpacks are packed, and many families are helping a son or daughter settle into a college dorm or first apartment.
As you prepare for the new school year, it’s also a good time to think about electrical safety and energy efficiency.
Heading Off to College? Use Power Strips Wisely
Many electronics continue to draw electricity even when they’re turned off or in standby mode. An advanced power strip can automatically cut power to devices that aren’t being used, helping save energy without adding another task to your day.
When using power strips, keep these safety tips in mind:
- Never plug one power strip into another.
- Don’t overload outlets, power strips or extension cords.
- Keep cords out from under rugs or furniture where heat can build up.
- Choose power strips with built-in surge protection to help protect laptops, televisions, gaming systems and other electronics.
Electrical Safety for Younger Students
For families with younger children, the start of school is also a good time to review a few important electrical safety reminders.
Teach children to stay away from power lines, substations and pad-mounted transformers. Remind them never to climb on or play near electrical equipment.
If they see a downed power line, they should stay far away and tell an adult immediately. Even if a line doesn’t spark or appear dangerous, always assume it is energized.
Small Steps Make a Difference
A few simple habits can go a long way toward keeping your family safe and reducing unnecessary energy use throughout the school year.
From all of us at Nobles Cooperative Electric, we wish students, teachers and families a safe, successful and exciting school year!
