The Hub Drive-In: A Slayton Landmark, A Cooperative Legacy

For decades, The Hub Drive-In has stood as more than just a spot for a burger — it has become a cherished summer tradition, a first job experience, a weekend ritual, and a vital part of the Slayton community and is now open virtually year round. Conveniently located along Highway 30, The Hub has delighted generations of families, travelers, and teens with its classic American drive-in cuisine and countless memorable moments.
A Rich History
The Hub's history traces back to the 1950s when it first opened its doors to customers owned by the Gillette family and others. However, it was in 1975, over 50 years ago, that the Westra family took the reins. Their ownership marked the beginning of an era characterized by friendly service and family-oriented values that have lasted over half a century. Their unwavering commitment to quality, community, and consistency has helped transform The Hub into the beloved establishment it is today.
A Foundation for Young Talent
Over the years, countless local students have embarked on their first job journey at The Hub, gaining essential skills in customer service, teamwork, and understanding what it means to contribute to something that spreads joy. For many, the enticing aroma of crispy fries, the delightfully yummy cheese sauce, the best ice cream, and the convenience of calling in an order for outstanding carhop service have created lasting memories.
A Strong Cooperative Relationship
The Hub has long been a valued member of Nobles Cooperative Electric. The Westra family not only powered their business through Nobles Cooperative Electric, but they also relied on us for electricity in their homes in Fulda. This enduring relationship is a source of pride for us and exemplifies the strength of our cooperative values: serving our neighbors, supporting local businesses, and growing together.

A New Chapter Begins
As of June 2025, The Hub is ready to embrace a new chapter. The Westras have thoughtfully decided to pass the torch to a new family, Jase and Sherri Roemeling, who will uphold the drive-in's proud legacy. While change can evoke mixed feelings, we eagerly anticipate seeing a new generation take charge and continue delivering smiles, sundaes, and stories to the community.
To the Westra family: thank you. We appreciate your dedication, years of service, contributions to local youth employment, and partnership with Nobles Cooperative Electric. Your nearly 50 years of stewardship have made The Hub a treasured gathering spot that will endure in the hearts—and photo albums—of many.
And to the new owners: welcome! We are excited to support you as you embark on this thrilling journey. We are confident that under your guidance, The Hub Drive-In will remain a shining symbol of community spirit and summertime joy for years to come.
Whether it's your first visit or your 500th, one truth remains: there’s truly no place like The Hub—powered by tradition, community, and Nobles Cooperative Electric.
