Minnesota's energy landscape is evolving rapidly, with new technologies and a strong push towards cleaner energy sources. However, some of our policies, particularly those around net metering for residential solar, haven't kept pace. It's time for a change that benefits everyone.
Why Net Metering Needs Reform:
- Outdated: Minnesota pioneered net metering in 1984, but the policy hasn't been updated to reflect today's solar technology or our state's commitment to carbon-free electricity by 2040.
- Expensive: Net metering forces electric cooperatives to buy excess solar power from homeowners at higher retail rates, even though it could be purchased for less elsewhere. This drives up costs for all members, not just those with solar panels.
- Inequitable: Net metering often leads to a cost shift, where members without solar end up subsidizing those who can afford to install it. This disproportionately impacts lower-income households.
A Better Path Forward:
Reforming net metering isn't about discouraging solar; it's about creating a system that's fair, sustainable and supports a modern grid.
This Means:
- Fair compensation for solar energy: Finding a balance that encourages solar adoption, while ensuring costs are distributed equitably among all members.
- Grid stability and reliability: Integrating solar and other renewable energy sources in a way that maintains a reliable and resilient electric grid.
- Affordability for all: Ensuring electricity remains affordable for everyone, regardless of whether they have solar panels.
Minnesota's electric cooperatives are committed to working with policymakers and members to find solutions that benefit everyone. By modernizing our approach to net metering, we can build a cleaner, more equitable energy future for all Minnesotans.
