Gold Award for Website Redesign
Nobles Cooperative Electric is honored to announce it has received the Gold Spotlight on Excellence Award at this Connect Conference in Kansas City. This prestigious recognition, presented by the Council of Rural Electric Communicators and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA).
The newly redesigned website, launched in September 2024, marked a major step forward in the cooperative’s efforts to modernize its online presence. Previously relying on a generic, template-based design shared by many cooperatives, Nobles Cooperative Electric transitioned to a fully customized platform built to meet the specific needs of its nearly 5,300 members. The redesign not only prioritized an improved user experience and mobile accessibility but also integrated key services such as online payments through SmartHub, outage notifications, rebate program information, and access to newsletters, blogs, and social media—all in one centralized hub.
Receiving this national recognition is especially meaningful for Nobles Cooperative Electric, which serves a rural region of southwest Minnesota. “With more than 900 electric cooperatives across the United States, being selected for a Gold Spotlight on Excellence Award is an incredible honor,” said Adam Tromblay, General Manager/CEO. “It’s a powerful reminder that being a small cooperative doesn’t limit your ability to make a big impact. This award reflects the hard work, creativity, and commitment of our entire team to serve our members in innovative and meaningful ways.”
“Our mission was to create a digital platform that truly reflected who we are as a cooperative and community,” said Tracey Haberman, Member Services Director at Nobles Cooperative Electric. “We wanted a site that was easy to navigate, visually engaging, and above all, relevant to our members’ daily lives. Receiving national recognition for this effort is a proud moment for all of us.”
The project was spearheaded by Christy Riley, a marketing consultant with extensive web design expertise, who worked closely with Nobles Cooperative Electric staff and Redwood Valley Technical Solutions. While Redwood Valley Tech developed the core framework and landing pages, the content, imagery, and ongoing design elements were created in-house. Every photo and article on the site is original and tailored to the cooperative’s mission, members, and local community.
The decision to rebuild the website was rooted in both member feedback and internal frustrations with the old system. Members frequently struggled to find information, particularly on mobile devices, and staff found content updates slow and cumbersome. The new platform not only streamlines content management but also allows the team to quickly publish updates during outages, create timely alerts, and ensure information is always current and accessible.
Financial efficiency was also a key consideration. By shifting away from the previous provider, Nobles Cooperative Electric significantly reduced its annual hosting costs by approximately a 62.5 percent — while also completing the project under budget and ahead of schedule. The total redesign required fewer internal hours than originally anticipated, and the result is a platform that is both cost-effective and ready for future changes as technology evolves.
The new site is still in its early stages of data collection, however initial feedback has been positive. Enhanced navigation, a mobile-friendly design, and clear, engaging visuals have already made a strong impression. “This new site isn’t just a tool—it’s a reflection of our commitment to transparency, service, and community,” said Haberman. “It’s a space where members can find the information they need, stay connected during critical times, and feel proud to be part of something local and member-owned.”
“This was such a fun and rewarding project to design and bring to life,” said Christy Riley, Marketing Consultant. “It was exciting to create something that truly reflects the personality of Nobles Cooperative Electric and the community it serves. We’re proud of what we’ve built, and we’re committed to continuously adapting and enhancing the site to keep it fresh, relevant, and engaging for our members.”
The Gold Spotlight on Excellence Award is a national affirmation of Nobles Cooperative Electric’s dedication to innovation and member service. With a bold, personalized website now serving as its digital front door, the cooperative is excited for what the future holds.
