Understanding Your Electric Bill: What's "Demand"?
You might have noticed a line item called "Demand" on your Nobles Cooperative Electric bill. What exactly is demand, and why is it showing up on your bill now?
Demand: A Snapshot of Your Peak Electricity Use
Simply put, "demand" measures the highest amount of electricity you use at any single point during the month. Think of it like this: if you turn on all your appliances and devices at the same time, your demand will be higher than if you spread out your usage throughout the day.
Why is Demand Important?
- Impacts Wholesale Power Costs: Nobles Cooperative Electric, like many electric utilities, pays a demand charge to our power supplier. This charge is based on our members' combined peak demand during the month. By understanding and managing your individual demand, you help us lower the overall peak demand, which in turn helps keep energy costs down for everyone.
- Fairer Cost Allocation: A demand charge more accurately reflects the true cost of providing electricity. It ensures that those who use a lot of power at peak times contribute their fair share to the costs of maintaining the electric grid.
What Does This Mean for You?
While you may not be charged for demand, it's important to understand how your energy usage habits impact your bill. By being mindful of your peak electricity use, you can potentially save money in the future and contribute to a more stable and affordable electric grid for everyone in our community.
How Can You Manage Your Demand?
- Spread out your electricity use: Avoid running multiple high-energy appliances (like your dryer, oven and water heater) simultaneously.
- Utilize timers and smart devices: Schedule appliances to run during off-peak hours (8pm - 8am).
- Consider energy-efficient upgrades: Look for appliances with high energy-efficiency ratings.
