Winter Chills

Old Man Winter can bring some serious chills! Here's how to stay safe and warm, indoors and out:

Beat the Freeze Outdoors

  • Layer Up: Wear loose-fitting, lightweight layers to trap warm air.
  • Head to Toe: Don't forget a hat and mittens (they're warmer than gloves!)
  • Stay Dry: Wet clothes can make you colder.
  • Block the Wind: Find shelter from the wind whenever possible.
  • Protect Your Lungs: Cover your mouth in extreme cold.
  • Ice Safety: Check ice thickness before venturing out onto frozen lakes.

Prevent Frozen Pipes

  • Drip, Drip, Drip: Let faucets trickle overnight, especially those on outside walls.
  • Open Up: Open cabinet doors under sinks to let warm air circulate.
  • Keep it Warm: Set your thermostat no lower than 55 degrees, even if you're away.
  • Ask for Help: If you'll be gone for an extended period, ask someone to check your house or drain your water system (except indoor sprinklers).

Carbon Monoxide Dangers

  • Protect Yourself and Your Family: Carbon monoxide is odorless and deadly.
  • Install Detectors: Make sure you have working carbon monoxide detectors.
  • No Indoor Generators: Never run a generator indoors.
  • Ventilate: If using a kerosene heater, open a window slightly and follow the manufacturer's safety instructions.

Stay Warm if the Heat Goes Out: Close off unused rooms, dress in layers and wear a hat.

  • Fireplace and Wood Stove Safety
    • Use a Screen: Always use a screen in front of fireplaces and wood stoves.
    • No Gasoline: Never use gasoline to start a fire.
    • No Charcoal: Never burn charcoal indoors.
    • Cool Down: Don't close the damper until ashes are cold.
  • Don't Use the Gas Oven: Never use a gas oven to heat your home as it puts you in danger of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Don't Forget Your Pets!

  • Bring Them In: Keep pets indoors during cold weather.
  • Provide Shelter: If pets must stay outside, provide adequate shelter.
  • Fresh Water: Make sure pets have access to fresh, unfrozen water.
  • Paw Protection: Keep salt away from your pet's paws.
